Mohamed Ismail Shawki

Mohamed Ismail Shawki (aka Ismail,)  is a Cairo-based visual artist. He graduated from the High Institute of Cinema in Egypt, however he works primarily with sculpture and installation. Replete with humour, his artistic practice re-situates objects from everyday urban life to articulate the broader struggles and pressures facing contemporary society. Including black plastic bags, street barriers, and the Google Chrome dinosaur, Ismail investigates the visual indicators of a neglected public infrastructure, a culture of shame, and authoritarianism in urban planning.
